Types of registration

Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (The Companies Commission of Malaysia) offers two types of registration: business and company.

  • Business registrations may be either sole proprietorships or partnerships. They are relatively easy to do yourself and cost below RM100.
  • Company registration involves the formation of a new legal entity, either a Private Limited Company (Sdn Bhd) or a Limited Company (Bhd). Registering a company is a lot more expensive and complicated.

I don’t know. I expect the only way to find out is the try the Application for Business Name Approval process and see what response you get.

For an existing sole proprietorship, is it simple (oe even possibe) to change properietor’s name? I.e. keep the business name and business registration number, without having to de-register the existing business with existing sole proprietor’s name and then re-register (with same old name) and be re-assigned a new number?

same frustration here, and this is what I did:

      1. Made sure Adobe Reader was updated and enabled(incase u were using other Pdf reader say Foxit Reader or Nitro)
      2. Use Internet Explorer (most gov portals are really IE dependent)
      3. And if you keep getting a redirect to gov portal homepage after clicking SSM Subscriber Registration, just click the “Senarai Bil DiDaftar” under “MyBayar” option on the left panel. I found my registration unsent here. Then I proceeded to payment.
